The $10 million waste recovery and transfer center in Sacramento is situated on approximately 20 acres and includes an 80,000 square foot station capable of processing over 2,000 tons of waste a day. Unique features of the structure included a 275 ft. clear span rigid steel frame structure over the processing area, and a 300 ft. long subterranean tunnel for truck traffic below the facility. The facility also features an observation center and an educational amphitheater, which enables school children, community and industry groups and the public at large to learn about facility operations.

Carlton Engineering provided professional services from design development through construction administration. Carlton’s challenge was the five month schedule to prepare working drawings and receive all necessary permits and agency approvals. To meet this schedule, Carlton used a design/build project delivery method and formed a team with Concept Design and Diede Construction, Inc. Construction began on schedule in early July, 1999; the facility opened for public use in the Spring of 2000.

Carlton capitalized on its multi-discipline approach, utilizing the geotechnical, structural, and civil engineering departments to successfully complete the project in a time-effective manner.
